A recent Internet joke saw adults following a random teenager on Twitter, and then updating followers on their teen’s life using the hashtag #followateen.
A few people may have described the meme as condescending, but as a parent of a teenager it gave me a few chuckles. You’re not really allowed to laugh at your teenager in real life, and my chuckling was done with great fondness, I promise.
Then, driven by Tavi Gevinson of Rookie Mag fame, the teens got in on the act, and started #followanadult.
This mum probably spoke for many who wondered why adults would want to follow a teen on Twitter π
And finally, a dad proud of his graduating teen.
This is awesome! How did I miss this!!!? Bah, I guess I’m just not cool. Did you #followateen?

I missed this trend – sounds hilarious! I’ll be keeping an eye out for it now though π
My kids aren’t on Twitter so I can’t annoy them by trying this – darn shame!

Yes, sometimes Twitter is good for some old-fashioned, nobody gets hurt hijinks.
Funny stuff! Although with three teens and a 12 year old in my house, I think I have enough teen wisdom for now! π
No, #followateen is not for you Lisa π
lol! How amusing. Thank you for sharing this, will start digging on twitter now to see more π

Yes, so glad the teens have got someone like her in their corner.

I cant keep up with the teens on twitter – I get lost in their language and how fast they move from one topic to the next and really I’m not ‘that’ far from being one!

My teen wrenches any control or device out of my hand if I’ve taken a millisecond longer than her to use it. I’m hardly a luddite, but she makes me feel like one!
Absolutely awesome! Love it. Totally missed this meme. V.

Oh this is hilarious, see what I miss when parenting teens keeps me away from following one on twitter. Pppffttt how dare reality intercept and block my online fun. π
